What is Pilates?

Pilates is a type of mind-body exercise developed in the early 20th century by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates, after whom it was named. Pilates is great for strengthening and toning, with a focus on your core, and for increasing your flexibility.

 Some of the Health benefits of Pilates include increased muscle strength and tone, particularly of your core, including the abdominal muscles, lower back, hips, and buttocks, balanced muscular strength on both sides of your body, enhanced muscular control of your back and limbs, and improved stabilization of your spine.

Why Is it Called "Reformer" Pilates?

Pilates is traditionally performed on a mat, leveraging your body weight as resistance. As Pilates evolved, a machine was developed that has a padded table that glides on rails, relying more on pulleys with leg or arm straps, to provide resistance with less strain on your body.  This type of machine is used in all Reformer Pilates classes.

Body Balance reformers are created with the best of science and movement together. Pilates builds strength, core stability, flexibility, and mental focus. It is one of the best modalities for improved strength and flexibility while offering low impact to the body.  With Pilates, quality of movement is stressed over quantity of movement. All of our instructors will encourage and teach proper technique, breath and alignment.

How Are Yoga and Pilates Different?

Yoga can help deepen your meditation practice and connection to your higher self, build physical and mental strength, and improve your flexibility and balance. Pilates can be suitable for recovering from an injury, improving your posture, and building core strength. Both involve linking breath with movement and a mind-body connection.  There’s no better…or, right or wrong.  Variety is great and simply getting and staying active is the key!

What Is Our Brand of Pilates?

It’s simple, stick to the basics of why Pilates started!  Pilates is used heavily in Physical Therapy because it’s tried and true. When properly taught, we can hone in on very specific muscle groups and target both primary and supporting muscles to improve flexibility and strength in ways that other modalities just can’t quite do. You won’t see us mixing in heavy weights, cranking up the tunes for high-tempo moves or asking students to try some obscure positioning.  Although these aspects may add variety, they also increase the potential for injury, which is counterproductive!  So, simply put…stretch, strengthen and tone!

All of our reformer classes are small-group (e.g. 2-4 students), which ensures our teachers can provide the personal attention needed to each student attending.

Pilates Fusion

This class fuses pilates with strength training and yoga. It is fast-paced, challenging, and well rounded if you are looking for a full body workout that involves the breath and proper alignment throughout class. Expect to sweat and groan, and prepare to be sore in the best way! You will use weights and props, which we provide.
